Did you know that movies get to stay in movie theatres, or not, based on their performance on the opening day and the opening weekend? That's it. Wait to see a film you care about, and it very likely could be gone.
During the Mill Valley Film Festival in October of this year, I was moderator on a panel of women filmmakers discussing issues around production and gender disparities. One local woman made a daring suggestion: She reported her discovery of a national network to mobilize audience support for African-American film releases by getting out the word, by email and fax, to folks around the country whenever an important African-American film was about to open.
"Wouldn't it be great to have something like that for women's films as well?" she asked.
I couldn't agree more. So, this space is consecrated to the posting of
film-opening bulletins. Be sure to post them with dates and cities. The
postings can be for films which have been directed by women and inspire
us (and, let's face it, some of them are business-as-usual movies). They
may also include movies that don't have women as directors but are
really important for us (like Thelma and Louise, for instance) and
demand to be seen and supported to change that toxic, woman-bashing or
women-invisible landscape out there. Now let's see if we can get out to
movie theatres and make a difference.

Wrote... Good points on women in film. I especially loved your interview with the directors of "The Eyes of Tammy Faye". FEMINISM needs more FASCISM! Just like the old days. Make men slaves. Check out my website for some rather humorous ideas!

Wrote... I have just established a website dedicated to encouraging women to do just what Ruby suggests here - go see chick flicks the weekend they open. Grab your girlfriends and make a fun outing of it. My friends and I make a point of going to the Friday matinee, followed by coffee and discussion. Somehow it seems more fun (and slightly irresponsible) to take a few hours off from work and mothering responsibilities! But Friday night or anytime will do!
